8357 pr̥thivī́-, pr̥thvī́- f. 'the earth' RV. [The 'laryngeal' explanation of pr̥thivī́- (accepted EWA ii 334) is most doubtful: Av. yezivī, which cannot be shown to have schwa, is poss., with Humbach Die Gathas ii 94, metr. dissyllabic like RV. yahvī́-. Apart from Pk. pahivī- which agrees with Sk., MIA. and NIA. show only -u- and -a-. Poss. there was an alternation *pr̥thuvī ~ *pr̥thavyāḥ like vásvī ~ vasavyàm, while pr̥thivī́- is a phonet. conditioned variant like púruṣa- beside *pūrṣa-, *puriṣa- and prátūrti- beside tīrṇá- (J. C. W.). — √prath]
