[Scarcely with P. Tedesco JAOS 65, 86 < vr̥ddha- 'cut', but one of a series of words with initial labial expressing a defect of body, mind or character, whether of Mu. (PMWS 95) or Drav. origin (T. Burrow BSOAS xii 387): cf. paṇḍá-, phaṇṭa-, bhaṇḍu-, vaṇṭa-². Of these at least vaṇṭa-² is poss. an IA. deformation of Indo-ir. vanta- in Khot. vanda 'short', Bal. gwand, Par. γanȫ́kȫ IIFL i 256 (cf. kuṇṭha- ~ Pers. kund) associated with similar Mu. or Drav. words. — Full list of 'defective' words with initial b- and bh- s.v. bukka- ⁴.
