Indo-Aryan r̩dʰáti [2457]

2457 r̥dháti (a) 'increases, prospers, succeeds' RV. 2. ŕ̥dhyati Dhātup. 3. r̥ddha-. (b) '*cooks, is cooked': 1. ŕ̥dhyati. 2. r̥ddha-. 3. *r̥ndhati (cf. r̥ṇáddhi 'increases' RV.) [P. Tedesco BSL 72, 114 (see ND 537 a 34) derives the group 'be prosperous or pleased' — Pk. rijjhaï, riddha-, &c. — from an Indo-ir. *raigh- in Sogdian rēž 'pleasure'. This would however separate Pk. rijjhaï from Pa. ijjhati. The semantic development is 'prospers — is completed-matures (or is prepared) — is cooked': cf. similar development in the poss. connected randháyati. — √r̥dh]
