Indo-Aryan cʰárdati [4998]

4998 chárdati Dhātup., chardáyati 'causes to flow over' ŚBr., 'vomits' MBh. 2. *chr̥ndati, chr̥ṇátti 'utters, leaves' TĀr., 'vomits' BhP. [Basic meaning is 'eject' (cf. MIrish sceirdim 'spit out') seen above and in ā́cchr̥ṇatti 'overflows' VS., TS., ŚBr. Semantic development 'eject-leave-vomit' in both directions is widely paralleled in IA. (ujjhati 'emits, leaves', utkṣipta- 'ejected, dismissed, vomited', uttarati 'comes out, leaves, vomits', Pa. vihāmi = niṭṭhubhāmi, G. nākhvũ, s.v. naṅkṣyati, 'to throw, leave, vomit'; Pa. vanta- 'vomited, renounced', vāmayati > G. vāmvū̃ 'to throw overboard, leave'). NIA. tends to keep MIA. chadd- (< chárdati) and chaṇḍ- (< *chr̥ndati) as 'vomit', chaḍḍ- (< chárdati) as 'leave', but not exclusively. Derivation of Pk. chaḍḍēi < tyakta- Tedesco OrLit 1932 col. 527 phonet. impossible and semant. unnecessary. — √chr̥d]
