Indo-Aryan máṇḍala [9742]

9742 máṇḍala n. 'disc' ŚBr., 'ball for playing' MBh., 'circle, district' AVPariś., adj. 'circular' VarBr̥S., maṇḍalaka- n. 'disc' Yājñ., °likā- f. 'group' Śiś. 2. *mandala-. 3. *maṇḍa-⁷ (in maṇḍacaravant- 'having a noose' BaudhŚr.?). 4. *manda-. [P. Tedesco's derivation (JAOS 65, 84) from *vr̥tta-la- is phonet. unacceptable. Variation of ṇḍ with nd, if the words in Bshk. Tor. K. for 'thigh' belong, supports non-Aryan origin, for which T. Burrow's proposal (BSOAS xii 389) of Drav. *mŏṇḍale (> Tam. muṭalai 'globe, ball') is attractive]
