Indo-Aryan bʰaginī [9349]

9349 bhaginī f. 'sister' Mn., °nikā- f. Kathās. [J. Gonda AO xxi 23 supports derivation from bhaga-² 'vulva' (which, if it belongs to the 'crooked' or 'defective' word-groups of bhaṅgurá- or *vaṅka-², might with a variant *bagha- account for *baghinī- ~ bhaginī-). But EWA ii 460 sees in it more prob. the feminine of bhagín- as an expression of good wish — bhágaḥ kanī́nām of RV. i 163, 8 — to an unwed sister (note that in NIA. bhaginī- is usu. the younger sister). The transference of aspiration from the initial to the interior presents difficulty, unless as a conscious avoidance of similarity with bhaga-² 'vulva'. The argument in AO xxi 30 that no *baghinī- is attested and that therefore the transference could have occurred only at the stage bhaïṇī- is not conclusive that a form *baghinī- never in fact existed between the age of Aśoka and the first emergence of Pk. bahiṇī-. It is significant that in bhāginēya- no such transference occurred. The new bahiṇī- belonged to the Centre, the older bhaïṇī- remaining on the periphery in Dard., S., L., P., some WH. dialects, EA., Or., and Ko. — For distribution of svásr̥- and bhaginī- in NIA. see AO xxi 27. — bhagín-]
