[In many NIA. forms a final -u or -v may be < nom. and acc. sg. m. -ō, -aṁ which, confined originally to dir. sg. (~ obl. sg. and pl. stem pā{y}-), were often incorporated in the stem and even in derivatives. Possibly however, though not very probably, some of these forms are < pādú- q.v. — Words for 'quarter' with -u or -v are still more probably < nom. and acc. sg. pādō, °daṁ. — pád-²]
